Sparkling wines of Portugal

Portugal has a rich and diversified wine tradition, and its sparkling wines are gaining international recognition for their quality and excellent customer-benefit relationship. Here is some important information about Portuguese sparkling wines:

Principais Regiões Produtoras

Bairrada – The most famous royal producer of sparkling wines in Portugal. The Atlantic climate and limestone alone favor the production of fresh and mineral sparkling wines. The Baga caste is widely used, but also has sparkling wines such as Arinto, Bical and Maria Gomes.

Távora-Varosa – The least recognized region, but produces some of the best sparkling wines from the country, especially with the Malvasia Fina, Gouveio and Touriga Nacional castas. Many producers use the traditional method (champenoise).

Vinho Verde – Produces lively and aromatic sparkling wines, with high acidity and freshness, many times starting from the Alvarinho caste.

Douro – Corn made with Porto wines, but also makes elegant sparkling wines with grapes such as Gouveio and Rabigato.

Production methods

Traditional Method (Champenoise) – Used in Bairrada and Távora-Varosa, offers complex corn sparkling wines, with notes of toasted bread and ferment.

Charmat method – Most common in our green wine sparkling wines, providing fresh and fruity corn wines.

Caves São João (Bairrada) – One of the most iconic Portuguese producers, famous for the sparkling wines of Baga.

Murganheira (Távora-Varosa) – Great royal name, with refined and long-lasting sparkling wines.

Quinta das Pereirinhas (Vinho Verde) – Produces an excellent sparkling wine from Alvarinho.

Harmonization

Portuguese sparkling wines can be combined well with sea fruits, cured ones, fresh meadows and at the same time in Bairrada.
